Izzy is the youngest of Elena Richardson's four kids. And the only one Elena actively resents. Believing Izzy cost her a chance at a career and a personal life. This has had some noticeable effects on how Izzy grew up. Also how Izzy behaves. Izzy's also a lesbian, in 1997 upper end Ohio. So she has a bit of a chip on her shoulder for all of this. She's rebellious and destructive specifically to spite her mother's perfect idea of how things should be. Meaning Izzy seeks out disruptive shows of herself.
Dressing 'alternatively' and writing 'not your puppet' on her forehead, then refusing to play in a recital. All to stick it to her mother.
Izzy was dealing with her first girlfriend pushing her away due to children being bastards, silently because of the homophobia. The fear this fact would drive her mother away. Acting out more and more to vent her frustrations at everything, making it worse as her mother didn't want such 'problems.' At the same time, Mia and Pearl moved to town, and Mia's similar interests in arts, and being a bit weird (and also gay) lead Izzy's desire to grow closer to a mother figure who actually showed a single bit of love towards her. Escalating Izzy's fights with her mother (who distrusts Mia for various reasons).
Between Mia and Pearl, each of the Richardson's ended up in some form of crisis. Izzy watching and taking in what she saw, but not really helping - or allowed to help - her siblings. Who all pushed her away when they were in crisis. And wanted no part in her mother's crusade against Mia. Her siblings, to one degree or another overlook her in some way. Only standing up for her when it's too late.
Elena's holding Izzy to a different standard from her siblings finally broke what little hope Izzy had for them, and when she thought Elena forced Mia to leave town, Izzy tried to burn her mother's house down. In the ensuing chaos of emotions and drama, Elena finally said the thing no kid should ever hear: she never wanted Izzy. Izzy ran away from home, looking to go after Mia. As a show of solidarity, Izzy's siblings seeing what their mother said to their sister (who it turns out they all did love, just sucked at expressing it) decided, as a show of solidarity, to burn their house down for Izzy.
Izzy's expressive and attentive to her world, watching things play out before stepping in to challenge anyone. She'll constantly pick fights over what she views as injustice. Having become a social pariah early on in high school thanks to being caught making out with her girlfriend, she has very little concern for her own standing. Expressing all she is in her art, or- just having a furious tantrum when someone makes fun of her for being gay, or small, or weird.
But she's still a kid, she wants to be loved, have someone take her and say 'you're fine how you are, perfect.' She wanted it to be her mother. All Elena tried to do was sculpt Izzy into a copy of herself. She's afraid of where she'll go, who she'll be. She can see all the ways the deck is stacked against her, and has no idea how she'll keep going. But she is brave enough to keep going. Which is why she ran away from home. She had nothing else she felt comfortable doing there.
She does have an affinity to fire, as a way to calm herself down. Destroying in an act of self-expression. Which is why it was her choice to express her anger at her mother's treatment of her, and Mia. But usually she resorts to collages, spraypaints, and music. Far safer choices.
